Online stalking is something which sadly, very little action has been taken as far as dealing with the issue. Much more needs to be done in order to not only prevent it from happening in the first place, but to punish the perpetrators involved as well.
Many sites give you the option to block a user that is harassing you, but this is far from a solid, fireproof wall of protection for those being stalked and harassed. Some sites have better barriers for us to hide behind when we are being bullied by someone, but other sites only have partial barriers, if any at all, and they don’t always do a good job with keeping private the things we want kept private.
No one is exempt from becoming a potential victim. All kinds of people have experienced the stress and frustration that comes with being stalked, and it is something that happens for a variety of reasons. In some cases it’s about revenge and getting even with an ex that one might feel has wronged them. Other times it could be because they might have felt offended over something the person said, or they were attracted to your profile picture and became infatuated with you. Whatever the root of the fixation is, most of us will agree that it’s no fun at all to be followed and bullied from site to site.
There are a few tips and pointers we can follow to hopefully lower the risk of becoming victimized. The biggest and most important thing is never to give your physical address or your phone number out to anyone unless you are buying something from an online store. Also, be very careful who you disclose your email address to. We usually use the same email address to sign up at several different sites, and sometimes a person’s online activity can be tracked by their email address alone.
I also recommend using different user names at different sites. If a person harasses you on a particular site and then you leave that site, they’re less likely to follow you elsewhere if they don’t know who to look for.
Don’t be afraid to spread the word! If you are being stalked and harassed by anyone online, let the site managers know about it. Don’t hesitate to let them know what’s going on. It may not only help you in the long run, but others as well.
